LIGHT AND STRIPS OF SKY

End of summer, the long grass
has started to fade, bleached.
Through it wade two children,
pale blond as the stalks that sway
around them.
The sun reaches one tentative arm
to stroke their hair
and everything is gilt and glimmer.
Even my deep-sea dark cannot dim
the glittering beings that hang on
those small frames.
They know nothing of endings,
can't see that one is close.
They are light and strips of sky,
golden, fleeting,
something I can't anchor,
that will shine beyond my reach,
dawn on a distant horizon.
I will be stalwart in the dark
and whenever they return
they'll be carrying the summer.
