THE COUPLE

Night comes in from the East
and the stars wink at them from the sky.

They clip a starflower from their garden
and hang it on their door.

The star welcomes them in the morning
with a wave of the hand.

Standing on the balcony, they watch
the gulls in the clouds.

He puts on a tie and goes to work.
She cleans her glasses and goes to work.

The stars follow their activity
as written in The Star-Ledger.

On another day, the stars descend the sky to greet them
while they are distracted with making love.

He feels a star above his feet.
She feels a star beneath her stomach.

They catch the fuzzy, talky stars with their fingers,
and she gently sends them back outside.

These stars are rascals, he remarks.
I wonder what they’re saying, she wonders.

They walk to the beach.
In the midnight surf, there are stars underwater.

Standing by them, he smiles, she smiles, they turn to each other,
and they watch the stars wandering their eyes.
